I loved it back in the 80s/90s when arcades were far more prevelant because it meant we'd usually get more than just a straight arcade port. Sometimes you could put a C64, Spectrum and Amstrad version of the same sidescroller next to each other and they’d all be completely different. Often they were barely even ports, more like homages or reimaginings built from scratch. The worst part of it for me was 8-bit microcomputers where even the box art tried to confuse you as to exactly which version the screengrabs were from as they were often wildly different. They then released a Saga game as FF Legend. Or how the prequel to Secret of Mana on GB had a generic-ass cover and was just called ‘Mystic Quest’, the name of the completely different FF: Mystic Quest on SNES, which was called Mystic Quest: Legend here. In the 90s we also got stuff in Europe where the NES, Genesis and GB Contra games, 3 completely different games with different names elsewhere, were all just badged ‘Probotector’ here. At least they largely all came out at the same time so it was easy to spot, and easy to research on the internet too. Click to shrink. This is what the topic reminds me of too, in that the 2D versions on portables were often very interesting.
